RULES OF OPERATION: VIRTUAL SKELETON DATABASE

Definitions

  • VSD: Virtual Skeleton Database.
  • SICAS: Swiss Institute for Computer Assisted Surgery
  • CO-ME: The National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Co-Me (Computer aided and Image guided medical interventions) is a network of leading clinics and engineering sites in Switzerland.
  • UNIBE: University of Bern, Switzerland
  • HTI: Bern University of Applied Science, Switzerland
  • ETH: Swiss Federal Institution of Technology Zurich, Switzerland
  • Web-portal: Interface to the VSD via web technology.
  • Visitor(s): All unregistered users.
  • User(s): Researches registered to the VSD Web-portal.
  • File(s): Data stored through the Web-portal in the VSD (medical images, processed data, patient information, statistical shape modeling tools, processing methods).

Description

The VSD is a centralized web based storage system. The VSD provides a system tailored to the needs of the medical image analysis community. The VSD offers generic tools to store, exchange and collaborate on virtually any digital format. The hosted data is accessible for the community while collaboration and access tools catalyse their productivity.

  • The VSD was developed during CO-ME
  • Financially supported and operated by SICAS
  • Technical support and maintenance by SICAS

Users

These data are collected upon registration: Lastname, Firstname, Institution and University, email address. User will have the rights to

  • upload, manage and download data and files
  • use the background processes modules
  • are able to share owned files to other user(s)

Service

  • Visitors have limited functionality available. They can search and browse files but are not allowed to upload, download or manage files.
  • Users can use the upload, browse, manage and download services on the Web-portal.

Data Storage (Upload)

  • The information in the database belong to the person and group that initially uploaded it
  • Access right management tools are available to restrict the access of the data
  • All data stored in the VSD will be listed in the search results – only persons with the appropriate rights will be able to obtain the detailed information on the images and download them.
  • User uploading data to the VSD is responsible to manage access to the data and and comply with the relevant ethical constrains
  • The user is responible for proper anonymization of the uploaded data. The VSD assist the user with the anonymization of the filenames and metadata of the images through an automatic process.

Data Usage (online)

  • No commercial exploitation of the data, unless explicitly granted by the owner
  • Users have to accept the rules of operation
  • Downloaded files can be used under the attached Creative Commons license.

Service Duration

  • Guaranteed maintenance for the next 5 years.
  • Users will be notified three (3) month in advance if the VSD is discontinued. Within this time period the user can download their files.

Security

  • VSD keeps the files protected and files are backed-up regularly
  • The VSD cannot be sued or provides any financial compensation in case of data loss

File Control

  • The user is responsible to hold the rights to the uploaded files and have to be able to approve this to the VSD committee if asked for an approval.
  • The user is responsible that the uploaded data was collected within the research-ethical, medico-ethical and legal guidelines.

Maintenance and Operation

The VSD is operated and maintained by the Swiss Institute for Computer Assisted Surgery (SICAS)
